crazycat1126 Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) Hi Everyone! I thought that as I'm getting more settled in here I'd "formally" introduce myself. Nice to see so many familiar faces! ♥ My name is Catherine, and I go by Cat but I'm not much of a cat person. I have nothing against cats really, but my body seems to as I have a severe allergy to them. 😉 My screen name comes from an email/username I chose when I was in 8th grade. I've considered changing it to something less silly but *shrug*, hehe. 🙂 I've been digital scrapbooking since 2013, partly for memory keeping and partly as a creative outlet. My son is almost 2 1/2 now, and while I'm good at documenting events or holidays, I want to get better at capturing the day-to-day, translating some of the endless photos on my phone into pages. I'm also interested in trying out hybrid projects, does anyone have recommendations for tools, printers, or supplies you love for getting started? Edited January 9 by crazycat1126 2
Designer Elizabeth Albers Posted January 9 Designer Posted January 9 Welcome Catherine! I love documenting the everyday but I'm not much of a hybrid scrapper so I'l let others chime in with helps for that!
bestcee Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Welcome Cat! What kind of hybrid projects are you interested in? 1
Cara Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Welcome Cat! This is a great place to start! There are so many fabulous collections here that you can find and use related to whatever you decide to document. I'm a hybrid scrapper so I would be happy to give some suggestions. I went all in with my printer, the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500, but I print so many elements and photos that the price tag was worth it. I'm sure others here have great printer suggestions too. I love my Tim Holtz Tonic trimmers. I use those everyday! I could go on and on, so feel free to ask more questions! 2 - Cara K. Lampe - Instagram
Cristina Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Welcome Cat! I also use an Epson ET-8550 after seeing @Liz recommend it and I couldn’t be happier! I love using matte photo paper to print out digital designs. For photos, I use 4”x6” glossy photo paper. I use a variety of adhesives depending on the task; tape runners are great for photos, but for smaller elements I use liquid glue, or foam dots if I want to add dimension. I have an old Fiskars rotary trimmer, as well as a small guillotine trimmer by Tonic Studios. For fussy cutting, I use Fiskars scissors. 1
Lori Posted January 9 Posted January 9 15 hours ago, crazycat1126 said: I'm also interested in trying out hybrid projects, does anyone have recommendations for tools, printers, or supplies you love for getting started? Hi Cat and welcome! I used to be solely a paper/traditional scrapbooker and then mostly digi for a while and have added more hybrid projects the past several years so I've accumulated a lot of tools but really feel like the best things most often (for me) are the basics - a printer, scissors, paper cutter, pens and adhesive. I have a Canon Pro-100 printer that is at least 10 years old and still works well. I use this for the majority of my printing and it handles thicker cardstocks well. I also use a small Epson PM400 for up to 5x7" photo prints, a Canon laser printer (family printer) that I use when I want to foil things, and I have an instax printer that will print photos from my phone. It is a fun way to print, but really not that cost effective so I don't use it all that much. I have a couple of smaller guillotine paper cutters and a larger rotary cutter from CARL. I like the smaller guillotines (one is fiskars, one is we r memory makers) for the cleaner cuts they give, but the CARL one is great for up to 15" sizes. I've also often used just a ruler and xacto knife. Smaller scissors are terrific for fussy cutting elements that I've printed. I have some from EK Success I do have cutting machines, but most often will just fussy cut instead of taking the time to set up things to work with my cricut or silhouette. I love the fine tip sharpies and the fineliner pens from Staedtler. For adhesives, I've used everything from tape runners to glue sticks. I usually just grab whatever is near me. I also like pop dots/foam squares. One thing that is and extra that I love is a tiny attacher from tim holtz. I use it often. And then I also really like washi tape. I also use an adjustable hole punch from We r memory keepers that has a 1/4" hole with the ability to adjust the distance for the hole placement on paper to about 2". This is pretty handy. There is so much out there that it is easy to get overwhelmed, but the basics are all that you need and are what I use most of the time. 1
Ann-Sofie Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Hi and welcome Cat! My first advice is to start simple just as Lori said. A good quality printer is number one. I have had my inkjet printer, a Canon Pixma for over 10 years and when that breaks I will get a printer with an ink tank for a lower ink cost. Smooth, thicker printer paper is also good for hybrid elements and cards. Besides that, you will need a comfortable pair of scissors, a paper knife, a steel ruler, double sided thin and foam tape and that is all you need to start. You’re going to discover things you want when you get the hang of it, maybe a date stamp and a stapler. Washi can be fun and it’s easy to get carried away and buy too many. A hole punch if you want to make ring bound albums or a travelers notebook is a great start. Good luck and have fun! 1
traceyholdyk Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Welcome Cat. I started out as a physical memory keeper, slowly moved into digital making photo books etc. My true love though is hybrid memory keeping because I love to be able to manipulate digital products to suit what I need. The other ladies have covered most of the things that you will need like printer, scissors, adhesives and paper cutter. I use a Canon MG5460 which I have had for a very long time but has served me well. I love to use matte photopaper because I don't really like the look of gloss and I find it marks easily. But I also like printing on different papers, in particular sticker paper and vellum. Also what you print on makes a different to how the colours come out on your paper. It's actually fun to try different papers to find the style you prefer or just to give you a different look. But the most important thing to remember is to have fun, play, make mistakes, learn new styles and enjoy reliving your memories while you scrapbook. Always call out if you have any more questions, the creative team here are a wonderful group of creatives who are only too willing to help. 1
crazycat1126 Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 Thank you ladies for the warm welcome and all of the suggestions!! ♥ Admittedly, it's the printer that is holding me up a bit. I guess I could start off by sending pdf files and cardstock to work with my husband, lol. Good thing it's a family business. 😉 1
